(Nordic missiles troops are meh at best, the only real useful unit are the Hurlers against the Nomad tribes), either some shock troops like some Nordic Axe Warriors, Norse Berserkers, Viking Raiders or Chosen Warriors. Fill the other slots with either your own cavalry. Put some cheap Thrall Spears on the flanks to deter any cavalry from flanking you. (35 of it being base MD so it also applies when flanked or rear-attacked afaik) The Hirdmen reach a whooping 65 Melee Defense (which is still actually pretty low from a mechanical perspective but no matter, it should be enough to outlive the ennemy) when they are in shieldwall. Pikes should negate the disadventage of having poor mass since they stop units. Now you put a line of these guys closely followed (so the pikes actually go through the unit) by Nordic Pikes (which are very easy to obtain) and your center should be rock solid. (They are maybe only outshinned by the WRE Armigeri Defensores) Reason number one : Be it Saxons or Viking Forefathers you get - from my point of view - one of the most cost/effective defensive sword unit of the game : Either the Hearth Guard (Saxons) or the Hirdmen (VF). My usual Nordic tactic is to rush the Warlord buildings. hammer and anvils are very deadly, especially if you cycle charge the enemy.Īnd here, if you aren't in game to look at stats, you can use these. It has the ability to wreck infantry, even when braced. you will lose out on their buffs.Īnd a minor note in general, cav is a lot stronger in attila than in past titles. you don't want to send in a unit with a few men, not good in melee just to die. just make sure you look at their stats or how many men they have. I would recommend looking for units that provide morale(encourage) if your units are prone to mass routing. You could also use some infantry in shield wall to be the main line, or back up the front line. combine that with good cav(skirm cav can still be very useful) and some javs and you are set. backing them up with some shock infantry(infantry good on the charge and has good over attack stats). spears tend be very sturdy units, making them be on the front line to each charges or just hold the enemy is not a bad idea. As the game progresses, for the most part units upgrade, getting heavier and more armor making them less vulnerable to missiles and cav.Īnyways, it depends on how you play and what you want to be the killing power of your army. If you plan on making use of them, i would recommend upgrading them asap.īarbarians from what i seen are for the most part very vulnerable to missiles, making missiles units very powerful against them.(especially javs) especially in the early game. Nordic band are very crappy infantry(but cheap), and they are not something i would rely on. It is a good idea, for any faction you play, to look at the units stats and upkeep. Preferably put them in shield wall, after they are out of ammo (most Norse melee infantry have some javelins/throwing axes). Try to get ASAP access to Hirdmen, Axe Warriors and Norse Warriors - these guys are very decent units already.Īnd above all, if your unit has a shield wall ability, use it! It gives you the edge in most melee engagements, even with units which would normally beat your units in one-on-one combat. Many Norse units have passive ability fear, try to use it to full extent, it works well against other low-quality early units. Also upgrade Nordic Levies to Nordic Spearmen ASAP, you need some decent spears to tie up incoming enemies. I don't recommend using Nordic band and Brigade - once out of their javelins, they are useless because of their pathetic stats. You can also exploit Warhounds with missles, this combo works pretty well early in the game. Ironically, Nordic pikes are quite good early in the game, though ahistorical as hell. However, they are extremally expensive, for early game standards. The only capable ones are general, Nordic axe warband, Viking raiders and javelin cav. Keep in mind that early game Norse units are inferior (I don't want to call them garbage, though they deserve it) to typical early Germanic ones or even Celtic/Slavic. 2K A Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia.846 A Total War Saga: Fall of the Samurai.
